There is music I have unchecked in iTunes that I do not want to play (such as duplicates, or Christmas) yet all music syncs to the iPhone. However, the iPad does not list the unchecked items.


For both the iPhone and iPad, under Music, Sync Music is checked as well as selected playlists, etc. (No Artists, Genre, or Albums are checked). Under playlists, Christmas is unchecked (that playlist does not show up on the iPhone or iPad). In iTunes, all the unwanted music is unchecked.


I do not sync to iCloud for my music. iCloud drive is turned off on phone.


All hardware is current versions and iTunes is 12.4.3.1.


With the settings for the iPad and iPhone in iTunes being the same, why does the phone act differently?

Several thoughts come to mind:


  • Do you subscribe to iTunes Match and/or Apple Music? If so, be certain Settings > Music > Show Apple Music is "Off".
  • Your post's title and question discuss "syncing". Well, syncing is a process that recurs. So it's not at all clear if the unwanted music:
    • Syncs to the iPhone each time you sync.
    • Synced to the iPhone one time you synced, and then lingered on the iPhone.
    • Was placed on the iPhone at some time in the past, and you're now disappointed the music does not disappear as a result of subsequent syncs.


Therefore, I recommend the following process, which is going to clear all music off your iPhone, and then re-add only the music you wish to be synced.


  • Sync your iPhone using iTunes. But when doing so, uncheck the "Sync Music" box:
  • Disconnect the iPhone from iTunes. Delete all remaining songs from the iPhone.
  • Reconnect the iPhone to iTunes, and perform the sync with the songs you wish to place on the iPhone.

Is this checked by any chance? Your iPad will have different settings from your iPhone.

ALL of the nearly 700 music tracks were still on the phone. Shouldn't there have been little or no music at that point?


I shut down the phone and restarted - the music was still there.


Repeated this process three more times and the music remained unchanged on the phone.


When I checked the box the add the music back, during the sync it showed that all the music was being added back, but it doesn't appear any differently than before will all the unchecked individual songs still showing.


As an experiment I unchecked just one song, synced, and it didn't show on the phone. Then I rechecked it, synced again and the song returned? Over 100 tracks are unchecked in iTunes, yet still show on the phone. Much of that music was added from my own CDs.


I do not have iTunes Match and have not joined Apple Music.

I would think so.


But regardless of what "should have been" or "should not have been", why not simply delete all the music from your iPhone at this point and then proceed to re-sync?

I have discovered that the Christmas music that appeared on the iPhone was only the music I got through iTunes. However, not all purchased music shows. I am going to try first to delete just those tracks that still show on the iPhone which is less than 10% of the total tracks. If that fails, I will go the total deletion route.


I estimated the process of deleting all tracks would take between two and three hours to delete one track at a time. Apple needs to consider a "replace all" option like with Calendars and Contacts.


Due to the late hour, I am not going to do anything until tomorrow.

Tracks that I put into iTunes from my own CDs did not have to be manually deleted, only purchased tracks. Go figure.


I then deleted 40 tracks of music and did a sync.


The tracks did not return to the iPhone.


However, when I recheck the tracks at Christmas time, then uncheck them again, I will find what what happens.

This may be caused by Settings > iTunes & App Stores > [Automatic Downloads] Music = "On".
